Glossary



Bar code - Standard bar code used by retailers.

Cover Lines - Lines and/or small captions that tell us about the stories inside. Not made to distract the reader from the main image.

Dateline - Usually displayed with the price, this is the week and/or month and year of publication.

Institution - The companies and organisations that provide media content.

Left Third - Used mainly in western countries, the left third – the furthest side to the left of the magazine – features top stories in the magazine.

Main cover line - Shown in the biggest font and brightest colour, this shows what the main feature in the magazine is about.

Main image - This is the image relating to the biggest, featuring story. It is normally centered on the cover.

Masthead - The title of the magazine. Shown in the brands designed typeface and often coloured to go well with the rest of the magazine.

Model credit - Credits to the models used are not usually displayed on the cover.

Plugs/Puffs - Often displayed in a unique, unusual way, these are extra bits of information.

Representation - The way in which people, places and ideas are portrayed.

Selling line - The categorised group of people the magazine is aimed at. Often stereotypical.

Stereotype - Images usually focus on generalized traits.

Target Audience - This normally sets out the magazines "editorial philosophy". It is a short description if the magazines main marketing point that appeals to the key target audience

USP - This is the unique selling point.
